7 Warmer European destinations to visit during Winter!

While I was blessed most of my life with very mild winters (Lebanon has the most perfect weather in my opinion), I can’t say the same about winters in the Netherlands.

As I mentioned in the 7 fun things to do in Europe during Winter, Winter and Europe go well together for a reason: it is pretty damn cold!

Having said that, some part of Europe are subtropical and are the perfect destinations to escape cold winters. By warm, I don’t mean humid Summer weather but rather gentle Spring weather***good enough for me***

We travelled last year twice to Lanzarote once in December and another in March. Believe me when I tell you that it will be so nice to be able to walk around in a long-sleeved shirt instead of a winter coat.

We chose Marbella this year to escape the cold.

Let’s check out quickly these 7 warm European destinations next time you need a Sun escapade:

Sicily is a beautiful Island all year around. The island enjoys a Mediterranean climate, much with long, hot summers and short, mild winters.

In the middle of the winter season, January is one of the coldest and wettest times to visit Sicily. Temperatures rarely reach above the average high of 12°C during the day and they can drop as low as 5°C after sunset, so plenty of warm clothing is needed when visiting the island this time of year.

That being said, however; these temperatures are more than comfortable when compared to those that more northerly regions in Europe have to endure in this winter month.

Winter in Sicily means you’ll have the whole Island for yourself: fewer crowds, bright blue skies, and almond trees in full bloom.

According to Posarrellisvillas.com:

” If you want to avoid the tourist crowds and soak up the winter beauty of this island, which is home to the magnificent ruins of Romans, Greeks, Normans and Arabs, head down to this Tuscan place this January or February.

If you are planning a trip to this region during the Winter season, there are some things you should know including being aware of opening days and hours. Click here for more detailed instructions.

Winter in Malta sees very little rainfall and temperatures which rarely drop below 15C. Is Malta is a good place to visit in Winter? The answer is yes, but it depends on what you are coming for.

Malta gets more than 300 sunny days a year and is surrounded by clear blue waters, some of the cleanest in the Mediterranean, and is much enjoyed by visiting swimmers, snorkelers and divers.

Winter brings greater risk of bad weather (although even in January the average daytime high is 15 C), but is a good time for the budget-conscious, as flights are cheaper and accommodation often dramatically so

The first months of the year are usually the coldest with temperatures fluctuating between 10-17 degrees. Rain is a bit more common during these months too.

The weather would be just perfect for wrapping up and taking a stroll around some of Malta’s most enticing sights.

Crete sees sunshine year round, and although the locals will find the winter average of 15C to be cold and chilly, those from further North will take pleasure in that kind of sunshine.

“Out of season” and “off-season” the right time to enjoy Crete’s more peaceful nature. A good time to pursue interests, studies, hobbies and hikes.

Madeira along with the Azores, are truly unknown natural gems of Europe. Madeira during the Fall / Winter is the perfect holiday destination.

The Portuguese islands of the Madeira archipelago, an autonomous region of Portugal, comprise 2 habited islands off the northwest coast of Africa that were settled in the 1400s.

Madeira and Porto Santo are known for a warm, subtropical climate. The islands are mostly visited by active travelers who seek for outdoor adventures like hiking along old “levadas” (aqueducts) in the mountains or even trail running, playing golf.

The sun is shining about 6 hours a day, but at temperatures of 18 – 20°C,  the weather is perfect for golf, walking, and sightseeing.

5-The Canary Islands

It’s summer all the time in the Canaries which means that they have the best weather in Europe in winter. Temperature have an average of 12 celsius to 21 celcius. Canary Islands are one of Europe’s best winter sun destinations and a favorite for the Northmen.

Tenerife is the warmest of the Canary Islands in Winter especially in December with lots of days with temperatures from 22 to even 28 celsius. The South of Gran Canaria is the best next island to visit in Winter ***well noted***

Lanzarote and Fuerteventura have more days with more winds and rain but are still in their 20 Celsius range. So definitely worth going!!

Floating in the Mediterranean with temperatures at around 20C, Cyprus is a Brits favorite for a winter escape. This little island nation gets as many hours of sunlight in winter as London does in May. (The closest weather to my Lebanon).

Maybe while there you can make a quick trip to Lebanon. It is just a 45 minutes plane ride away. Great weather, mouth-watering food, awesome parties and ancient stunning culture is awaiting you there.

Andalusia is the warmest part of mainland Spain: winter temperatures tend to be the highest in Malaga, on the Mediterranean, with a low in winter of 7-10 C and a high of 17-20 C. The sun shines almost every day. It doesn’t matter if it’s summer, winter, autumn or spring. Being a tourist in Andalusia is a pleasure at any time of the year.

We’ve booked an airbnb for a week in Marbella in February and we will be touring around Gibraltar, Granada, Seville, Ronda…I promise to keep you posted and write about our upcoming trip as soon as I can.

Erwin and I can’t wait for that. We are definitely in need of some serious vitamin D.
